RINNO Project Launch – The Hellenic Institute of Passive Building (HPHI) Press Release (English)

The HELLENIC INSTITUTE OF PASSIVE BUILDING  (HPHI) will participate in an EU project worth €4.8 million to address the issue of energy efficiency in EU residential buildings through innovative technologies, business and procedural models. This includes the use of new materials and components. , artificial intelligence (AI), augmented reality (AR) and equity financing using Blockchain.

The four-year project, called RINNO, is funded by the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 program and will focus on developing solutions for the construction industry to accelerate the rate of radical renovation of energy-efficient buildings across Europe, thus helping to achieve 32.5% energy saving target set by the EU Green New Deal.

RINNO & HPHI will achieve this through a combination of innovative technologies, protocols and business models.

Renewable Materials & Technologies

  • Plug-and-play modular solutions for the building shell
  • Harvesting and storage of hybrid renewable energy sources

Procedures

  • Digital twin data integration from drones, mechanical vision, thermavision and augmented reality
  • Renovation simulation, modeling and optimization tools
  • Renovation management tools including supply chain optimization via cobot, robot, 3-D printing, advanced control systems, AI enabled decision systems etc.
  • Control and automation of buildings through intelligent multi-agent systems
  • Training through interactive AR / VR

Business models

  • Smart contracts with Blockchain online microfinance, crowdfunding and other collective funding
  • Smart contracts with Blockchain capability for energy efficiency

The solutions to be developed by RINNO will be presented in four real renovation projects to quantify and validate their impact throughout the renovation process. Demonstration sites will be located in France, Denmark, Greece and Poland (total area 3,386 m2).

Starting in June 2020, RINNO will be coordinated by Dr. Stefano Barberis and RINA Consulting, in Genoa, Italy. The RINNO consortium includes 17 partners from Austria, Denmark, Finland, France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Spain and the United Kingdom. The E.I.PA.K. will offer the consortium the know-how to design and develop radical energy renovations at NZEB levels using the Passive House Standard, the recently fully developed PHPP software and analysis through DesignPH and DistrictPH. It will also use and improve training and certification programs for engineers and craftsmen. Even the E.I.PA.K. will lead the Hellenic Demonstration Area located in the Municipality of Moschato – Tavros. Four executives of E.I.P.A.K., more experienced but also young experts, will participate in the project. Finally, commercial companies in the field of energy saving in buildings, which will be announced soon, will support the Greek demonstration space.

About 77% of EU residential buildings were built before 1990 and 11% of Europe’s population is still living in energy poverty due to the building’s poor quality and in particular its thermal inadequacy. The European Commission estimates that a renewal rate of 3% per year is required to achieve its energy efficiency and environmental objectives in a cost-effective manner. Based on current renovation rates of 0.4% – 1.2% depending on the country, it may take more than 100 years to renovate the entire EU building stock. RINNO is a drastic approach to reducing costs, disruption and renovation times of radical renovation, while increasing energy efficiency, environmental efficiency and user satisfaction.

Arianna Amati, RINNO Coordinator at Rina Consulting, said: “RINNO is a great opportunity to support the construction industry to accelerate the pace of radical renovation of energy efficient buildings and to show its strengths and huge contributions. Europe for users and with users ”

Mr. Stefanos Pallantzas, head of E.I.PA.K. said: “EIPAK presents significant research and innovation in the fields of radical energy renovation and the implementation of the Passive Building and NZEB. The Institute employs a group of high quality staff for the design, development and implementation “Applications and services within the meaning of the Passive Building, while participating in research networks with various institutes around the world. The RINNO project will be a great opportunity for collaboration with new partners and experts and for access to new markets and know-how.”
